Why Biodiversity?

Humans are almost completely dependent on the natural world - the diversity of life - to generate our food, pollinate our crops, clean our drinking water, produce our fiber, derive our building materials, create our fuel, develop our pharmaceuticals, recycle our nutrients and waste, maintain our oxygen, clean our air, and regulate our climate. Biological diversity – also known as biodiversity – is the core environmental issue, and indeed the reason that humans survive on this planet. Losing ANY species inevitably impoverishes our lives and our entire society. We need life, and life needs us, now more than ever.
