Siamese Crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis)

A main target of our survey were Siamese Crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis), a Critically Endangered crocodile species known in Cambodia only from the highlands of the Cardamom Mountains. We were able to find some local r eports and field evidence indicating persistence of crocodiles in several of the rivers of Botum Sakor NP, although more detailed information is needed to determine which species they are, as these may be records of Saltwater Crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus). Jeremy Holden is now working with the Crocodile Team of Fauna and Flora International’s Cambodia office. Surveys along with camera traps are being set in locations in several rivers where we have reports and signs of crocodiles. We plan to continue collaboration with FFI on crocodile research and conservation in southwest Cambodia.

Objectives

  • Establish presence or absence in southwest Cambodia river basins.
  • Identify which of the two species any records represent.
  • Identify priority sites in collaboration with FFI.
